The question
What the project
needed to resolve.
Held Ground begins with material contrast rather than surface ornament. A single plane of burgundy velvet establishes the upper silhouette; black tulle below expands, fragments and meets the dark rock beneath it.
One shoulder remains exposed while the velvet crosses the body and continues into a narrow train, drawing a clear diagonal through the volume of the skirt.

The idea depends on how the materials behave. Velvet absorbs light and gives the upper body authority. Transparent tulle releases the lower silhouette and allows the surrounding air into the garment.
This is direction for further couture development, not a finished technical design.

- Build couture drama through surface embellishment, complex volume or multiple decorative interventions.
- The alternative
- Limit the look to two materials and let their opposing weight, opacity and movement create the image.
- Why this direction
- Velvet and tulle were chosen because their behaviour creates the drama without ornament: one holds the body and absorbs light; the other releases the silhouette into air and landscape.
Development path
Internal structure, weight distribution, drape engineering, pattern and final construction would be developed with an appointed fashion designer, pattern cutter and atelier.
